The golf world will train its eyes on the Open Championship next week. Until then, the biggest event in golf (at least, in terms of participants) will take place along the shores of Lake Tahoe, Nev.

The American Century Championship is ready to kick off its 34th annual event. Unlike PGA and DP Tour events — such as the Barbasol Championship and Scottish Open, also going on this week — the tournament at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course isn't about prize money or FedEx Cup points.

Indeed, it doesn't even field professional golfers.

Instead, the tournament will feature a who's who of world-class athletes in other sports, as well as entertainers and celebrities, in a charity-centered event.

One thing remains common between the ACC and other events, however: Only one golfer will walk away as champion.

  • Course: Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course
  • Location: Stateline, Nev.
  • Par: 72
  • Distance: 6.709 yards

The tournament has been held at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nev., for its entire existence. The course sits on the shore of Lake Tahoe at an average elevation of 6,230 feet.

American Century Championship past winners

The American Century Championship has been played every year since 1990, with former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien winning the inaugural event (and winning again in 2014).

Tony Romo is the defending champion. It was his third win in the event. He and Rick Rhoden (eight), Dan Quinn (five), Billy Joe Tolliver (four), Mark Mulder (three), Jack Wagner and Rypien (two each) are the only contestants to win the ACC multiple times.
